It’s Nice to Meet you!

Sarah McNair, MD

I didn’t grow up thinking I’d be a doctor—well, not a medical one, at least. I always knew I loved science, but also…philosophy. And art. And spirituality. Turns out, psychiatry is a fantastic field if you just love understanding and living life, because the nature of what it means to be alive and human is the undercurrent of everything we do.

I took a bit of a circuitous path to medicine, first by going to West Point, then by choosing to study French and Human Geography. After graduating, I flew helicopters for the Army and deployed overseas twice, and while I was home I finished premed classes at Kansas State University, near where I was stationed with the Army. I went to Harvard for medical school, and got to do research in Ghana, climb Mount Kilimanjaro and, by good fortune, do a psychiatry rotation at one of the best psychiatric hospitals in the world—I was sold.

I started my own learning about integrative medicine in medical school, when I began to see gaps in the care patients received and to look for ways to deal with my own physical and mental burnout. During residency at Walter Reed, I was introduced to functional medicine, and I finally had a name and a toolbox for what I wanted to do.

Life In A Few Pictures

The end of the road…making it to graduation at West Point…

…and starting from scratch again as a flight student!

Last day as a student, first day as a doctor.

Moving is a thing I’ve done a lot of…I’ve lived in nine states, deployed twice to Iraq, spent several months each studying in France and Ghana, and I’m a dual American-Canadian citizen (thanks mom!)

Travel and the outdoors have been a constant theme in my life, and they serve as my inspiration and my solace. All the photos you see throughout the website are from some of my travels!

I’m ever thankful for a support system that includes good people—and good animals.
